i spent over an hour in grand central station – hands-down one of my favorite buildings. like the hydroelectric power plant at niagra falls, it was created at a time when men of industry had a near-religious awe for works they had created — the mastery over the elements of time and distance and water. cathedrals to an age of Man As Supreme Creator. i cannot spend time in GCS without experiencing fits of jealousy for the lucky individuals who have been paid to make a life’s work of documenting every brick, every permutation of space and use that building has lived through.
